Often it is when human beings have lost everything, spoiled …

Often it is when human beings have lost everything, spoiled everything, and are no longer good for anything that they decide to devote themselves to the Lord. But what good are invalids to God? He needs youthful, strong, capable people. But when they are young, people always think first of their own pleasure, of ‘living their life' as they say. To undertake divine work is out of the question: they have far better things to do! And when they have spent and squandered everything, when they are decrepit, stiff with rheumatism, paralyzed or senile, it is then they say: ‘Do you need me, Lord? I have come to serve you.' But they have lost everything: their health, their strength, their hair, their teeth, everything. It is when they have nothing left that they say: ‘Lord, I have come to put myself at your service.' And the Lord looks at this scrap heap and scratches his head, for even He does not know in what way they could possibly serve Him. It is when we are young that we must begin to enlist ourselves in the service of heaven.
