If we take the trouble to go deeply into the principles of alchemy, we discover that it treats only matters of the utmost importance to us. Alchemy is the science of the transformation of matter, and the alchemist participates in this transformation out of a desire to assist nature. Well, we too can assist nature in its work on us. The preparation of the philosophers’ stone, which allows metals to be transformed into gold, is inscribed in the great book of life. This book of life is the universe, but it is also the human being. By working on our own matter, we can more rapidly become what we must become: the ‘gold proved by fire’ mentioned in Revelations. For it is fire that accelerates the process, and this fire is love. When you understand that you yourself are the matter to be cooked and that love is the fire you must cook it with, you will possess the knowledge that is key to preparing the philosophers’ stone and obtaining gold.
