Initiates teach their disciples that the number 2 is the result of the polarisation of the number 1, just as an electric socket or a magnet is made up of two poles, positive and negative. Which means that these two poles, which we think of as opposites, are in reality contained in the number 1. We call them positive and negative, or masculine and feminine, but we can also call them good and evil, provided we bear in mind that they are an expression of the 1, which is God, because they have the same origin. There is a tradition which names Lucifer, the archangel who revolted against God, the brother of Christ. It says that when Lucifer was thrown from heaven, during the fall he lost the emerald which adorned his forehead. And from this emerald which fell to earth was fashioned the cup in which Joseph of Arimathea collected Jesus' blood at the crucifixion. It is this cup that became the Holy Grail, a symbol that has played a great role in the history of Christianity. The initiates who established this relationship between Lucifer and Christ wanted to teach us that good and evil are two poles of one and the same reality: of God Himself.
