You’ll see intelligent, educated, sensitive, even idealistic people reduced to dragging members of their family before the courts, all for wretched money matters. Could they not rise a bit above all that? Why must they always cling to their interests, their possessions? My goodness, if each side would only make a gesture they would all feel much freer! To begin with, of course, they’ll find it difficult to make this gesture. But if they succeed, they will discover new regions in themselves, new lights, and there will be no one prouder or happier, because they will have achieved something very difficult: they will have conquered their lower nature. People’s lower nature is constantly advising them to be egotistical, envious and vindictive. And then they think they’re capable of following a spiritual teaching! Well, no, they’re not. Those who wish to be worthy of the light of a spiritual teaching are no longer permitted to act like ordinary people.
