Spiritual riches are extremely subtle, even elusive in nature, but those who know the value of these riches and strive to acquire them possess heaven and earth. Why not try to understand this? Someone will say: ‘But this is nothing new. I know that all our material possessions are neither secure nor permanent, that they never really belong to us. One day we must leave them behind, since it is impossible to take them with us to the other side. But knowing all that, I still feel the need to live this materialistic life. I like it.’ And, unfortunately, this is how it is: the intellect may see a situation clearly and know how advantageous it would be to adopt a certain behaviour, but, if the heart desires something different, what does the will do? It follows the desires of the heart and does only what pleases the heart. This means that if you want to live the rich, vast life of the spirit, you must love it, for understanding it is not enough.
