If you are looking for a spiritual guide, you should at least be aware of what to expect from one. A spiritual master will do all he can to help you understand the path that it’s in your interest to follow, but you have got to feel attracted to walking that path. A master cannot make you love the spiritual life; that depends on you, not on him. Of course, he can influence you to a certain degree, the way a friend who loves music or poetry can influence you, for human beings and all creatures, animals, flowers or even stones and objects often impart to us something of themselves without our knowing it. So something of your Master’s love for the splendour of the divine world may well communicate itself to you. But if you are not ready to accept his influence, nothing can force you. So, whether your Master succeeds in making you love the spiritual life still depends on you.
