‘To bless’ literally means to say good things, to pronounce words which bring about good. A true blessing, then, opens a channel and allows the influences of heaven to descend to earth. It is an act of white magic. But this act of white magic is only effective if those who perform it are selfless and pure and have mastery over themselves. As for those who receive this blessing, they must at least be receptive and have the desire to improve themselves and to work for the light. If these conditions are not met, a blessing is clearly an empty gesture. Nevertheless, it is always good to preserve this ritual in hopes that people may one day become conscious of what it represents, rendering its words and gestures truly beneficial.
